A relaxed and enjoyable afternoon exploring layering and glazing techniques to build depth and texture in a landscape painting. Guided by Cath Siswick, you’ll experiment with glazes, dry brushing, and mark-making, all in a friendly and supportive setting.
This workshop is perfect for beginners and those looking to refine their skills—no experience needed, just a willingness to have a go! By the end of the session, you’ll have a beautiful landscape painting to take home, along with new techniques to build on.
Come along, get stuck in, and enjoy an afternoon of painting in great company.
Glazing Techniques: Add luminous, atmospheric layers to your artwork with simple glazing methods that bring your painting to life.
Dry Brushing: Explore the delicate art of dry brushing to add texture, highlights, and fine details to your landscapes.
Brushwork Techniques: Try out different brushstrokes and see how they can shape the mood and style of your painting.
Mark Making: Develop your own artistic touch by experimenting with mark-making to add character and expression to your work.
Create Your Own Landscape: Bring everything together and apply these techniques to paint a stunning landscape in your own unique style.
All materials provided
Suitable for ages 16+
Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon but lunch is not provided. There is a cafe on site, and The Drum pub is within a short walk from the studio, or feel free to bring a packed lunch.
No experience necessary. This workshop is perfect for beginners.
Please bring old clothes or an apron - painting can get messy!
Long stay parking is available a short walk from the studio (Craft Centre Car Park: Open 7am – 7pm, parking charges apply, please bring cash), and the number 62 Torquay to Cockington bus stops at Cockington Village.

Textiles is a versatile medium, great for creating artwork as well as embellishing home furnishings and clothing. In this workshop you will learn to use appliqué, basic embroidery stitches and beading to create your own decorative fabric cupcake illustration.

Pointillism in Acrylics

Pointillism is defined by its use of mark making and colour. Pointillism paintings are created from hundreds of dots of carefully placed pure colours, relying on the eye to mix the colours to achieve maximum luminosity, in a similar way to pixels on a screen.
Learn how to use reds, blues and yellows to create the whole spectrum of colours. In this workshop we will look at basic colour theory, pigment strength and colour mixing before going on to create a colourful acrylic painting to take away with you.

Get started with Oil Paints

Starting out with Oils can be a daunting prospect, but with just a few basics you can unlock the potential of this rich and exciting medium.
In this beginners workshop we will be getting to grips with oil painting. You will gain understanding of the paints, learn about colour mixing and basic application techniques, and receive step-by-step guidance in creating your own still life painting.

Mastering Reflections | Large Scale Charcoal Drawing

In this workshop we will be getting messy with large-scale charcoal drawings.
Working at A1 in scale we will be looking at reflection and the refraction of light on glass as well studying the way in which glass objects interact with positive and negative space.
