This beginner-friendly evening course is the perfect introduction to acrylics, designed for those who are new to painting and want to build confidence with this versatile medium.
You’ll explore the essentials—from choosing the right brushes, palettes, and surfaces to experimenting with different techniques like glazes, alla prima, underpainting, and mark-making. We’ll also cover colour theory to help you create vibrant, well-balanced paintings.
No prior experience is needed—just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to get creative! Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or looking for a structured introduction to acrylics, this workshop is a great way to learn, experiment, and enjoy the painting process.
Come along and discover the possibilities of acrylic painting in a relaxed and supportive setting!
Mediums & Colour Mixing: See how different mediums affect texture and flow, and learn the basics of blending colours.
Surface Options: Try out different painting surfaces, like canvas and paper, and see how they each behave.
Core Techniques: Learn techniques like glazing and alla prima to help you build up your paintings or work more spontaneously.
Underpainting: Explore how underpainting helps add depth and structure to your work.
Colour Theory: Understand how colours interact and how to use them to create harmony and impact in your paintings.
All materials provided
Suitable for ages 16+
Tea, coffee and cake will be available throughout the evening.
No experience necessary. This workshop is perfect for beginners.
Please bring old clothes or an apron - painting can get messy!
Long stay parking is available a short walk from the studio (Court Street Car Park: Parking charges apply)

Textiles Illustration

Textiles is a versatile medium, great for creating artwork as well as embellishing home furnishings and clothing. In this workshop you will learn to use appliqué, basic embroidery stitches and beading to create your own decorative fabric cupcake illustration.

Pointillism in Acrylics

Pointillism is defined by its use of mark making and colour. Pointillism paintings are created from hundreds of dots of carefully placed pure colours, relying on the eye to mix the colours to achieve maximum luminosity, in a similar way to pixels on a screen.
Learn how to use reds, blues and yellows to create the whole spectrum of colours. In this workshop we will look at basic colour theory, pigment strength and colour mixing before going on to create a colourful acrylic painting to take away with you.

Get started with Oil Paints

Starting out with Oils can be a daunting prospect, but with just a few basics you can unlock the potential of this rich and exciting medium.
In this beginners workshop we will be getting to grips with oil painting. You will gain understanding of the paints, learn about colour mixing and basic application techniques, and receive step-by-step guidance in creating your own still life painting.

Mastering Reflections | Large Scale Charcoal Drawing

The Court Street Gallery, Trowbridge
In this workshop we will be getting messy with large-scale charcoal drawings.
Working at A1 in scale we will be looking at reflection and the refraction of light on glass as well studying the way in which glass objects interact with positive and negative space.
