Trying oils for the first time can feel a bit overwhelming, but with a few key techniques, you’ll soon see how rewarding this medium can be.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, we’ll cover the essentials—paints, surfaces, brushes, and colour mixing—before working through a series of simple, hands-on exercises to help you build confidence. You’ll get step-by-step guidance, practical tips, and plenty of time to experiment in a relaxed, supportive setting.

This workshop is perfect for adults who are completely new to oils or anyone wanting to refresh their basics. Come along, have a go, and enjoy learning the foundations of oil painting!
Course Highlights
The Basics: Find out what you need to get started with oils, from brushes and surfaces to paints and mediums.

Colour Mixing & Application: Learn how to mix colours and apply paint with simple techniques that bring your work to life.

Step-by-Step Practice: Follow easy, guided exercises designed to build your confidence and skills.

Hands-On Time: Enjoy time to practise and experiment in a relaxed, supportive setting.
Overview of the day
At 1:30pm we will start with welcomes, introductions and an overview of the session.

We will look at the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe, with a particular focus on her flower series, discuss the materials that we’ll be using, including paints, mediums, brushes and canvases, before going on to under paint our canvases in preparation.

To ease you into working with oils we will work through a series of quick practical exercises covering basic skills such colour mixing and blending techniques.

11:30am (ish) - Break for a hot drink.

Once refuelled we will draw/trace our images on to our under painted canvases and get painting. I will be there to guide, support and encourage you throughout the day.

1:00pm - Lunch break. There are a variety of cafes within a short walk from the gallery or feel free to bring a packed lunch.

After lunch you will spend a relaxing afternoon finishing your painting. Hot drinks will be available as and when required.

3:45pm - We will cover how to clean brushes/work stations, before a photo opportunity to show off your newly created masterpieces.

4pm - Head home with a completed painting ready to show off to your friends and family, and hang in pride of place.
